THE KEY TAKEAWAY

Organised evidence makes a professional review more productive. It does not make every expense deductible.

Agree the period and the scope

Start by confirming which tax year or accounting period your practitioner is reviewing. Individual and company circumstances can differ, so do not assume a folder labelled with a calendar year answers the question.

Keep a short list of changes: new income sources, employment changes, business activity or changes in household employment. These give the reviewer context for the documents.

Gather evidence, not just totals

Bring the relevant income certificates, statements and supporting documents for the review. What you need depends on your circumstances; not every item below applies to everyone.

  • Relevant IRP5/IT3(a) certificates and investment certificates.
  • Medical scheme tax certificates and supporting expense records where relevant.
  • Business income, expense evidence and bank statements if applicable.
  • A list of missing documents and questions that need professional judgement.

Leave room for questions

A software category is a starting point, not a filing decision. Ask about mixed personal and business expenses, unusual payments, missing evidence and any claims you do not understand.

Use SARS's current guidance and your practitioner's advice to confirm deadlines, required records and the correct return. Keep the final review and supporting evidence together after filing.
